AI Mode in Google
Published by Krister Ross · Updated July 2026
Google's search results are becoming a conversation. AI Mode answers your question directly, cites a handful of sources — and skips everyone else. Here is what it is, how to use it, and how your business becomes one of the sources it names.
In short
AI Mode is a conversational search experience in Google where an AI model answers your question directly instead of showing ten blue links. It builds on the same technology as Gemini, runs multiple searches in the background, and cites a small set of sources in its answer. For businesses this changes the game: being visible in AI Mode is no longer about ranking #1, but about being one of the few sources the AI trusts and cites.
What is AI Mode?
AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search where you get a generated, conversational answer instead of a traditional results page. You can ask follow-up questions, and the AI keeps context — like chatting with an assistant that reads the web for you.
Behind the scenes, AI Mode uses a technique called query fan-out: your one question is split into many background searches, and the AI synthesizes the results into a single answer with source citations.
AI Mode expanded to Norway, Sweden and Denmark in 2025, alongside AI Overviews. Together they mean a large share of Google searches now end in a generated answer — often without a single click to any website.
How to get and use AI Mode
AI Mode is available to most users, on desktop and in the Google app.
Find the AI Mode tab
Search on Google as usual, then choose "AI Mode" among the tabs above the results (where you find Images and News). You can also go directly via google.com/ai.
Ask follow-up questions
AI Mode keeps the conversation. Refine your question, compare options, or ask for details — the model remembers context from previous turns.
Check the sources
Answers include links to the pages the AI used. That link panel is the new front page of Google — the businesses cited there get the visibility, everyone else is invisible.
What AI Mode means for your business
In classic search, ranking on page one gave you a fair chance of a click. In AI Mode, the answer is generated and only a handful of sources are cited. Either the AI mentions you, or your customers never see you.
The work of becoming one of those cited sources is called AEO — Answer Engine Optimization. It builds on classic SEO but optimizes for being retrieved, trusted and cited by AI models, not just ranked. Read the complete AEO guide.
Structure content so one section answers one question clearly
Use schema markup so machines understand who you are and what you offer
Build entity authority: consistent name, offer and facts across the web
Earn mentions in sources AI already trusts — media, directories, industry sites
Measure how often AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini actually cite you
