01What the tool does
What is an AI agent readiness check?

An AI agent readiness check shows whether AI services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI features can actually get into your website, read its content and understand what you offer. It answers one simple question: when someone asks an AI to find, compare or book something in your market, can it use you?
The check reads what your website already serves publicly, the way an AI service would. You get a free preview with an overall verdict, a score, the state of each area and the most important problems, without giving an email address. The full report, with what to do in order of impact, is unlocked with a work email and also sent to your inbox.
The report is written so you can pass it straight to your developer, agency or whoever runs the site. It tells you what is stopping AI agents, not just that something is wrong.
02Why it matters now
Why do AI agents need to be able to use your website?
Your customers increasingly ask an AI instead of searching and clicking themselves. The AI reads websites, picks a few sources and presents an answer. If your site is hard to get into or hard to read, you will not be one of them.
- The answer replaces the click
- In ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews the user often gets the answer directly. The businesses the AI can read and understand get mentioned and linked. The rest become invisible, even if they rank well in regular search.
- Agents act on the customer's behalf
- AI agents go further than answering: they compare offers, fill in forms and place orders. A site built only for a person with a mouse and eyes gets passed over when an agent does the work.
- Many sites shut AI out without knowing
- Firewalls, bot protection and vendor defaults can block AI services without anyone making a deliberate choice. Cloudflare, for example, has blocked AI crawlers by default for new domains since July 2025.
- Your competitor gets recommended instead
- When an AI cannot read you, it uses the sources it can read. Often that is a competitor, a comparison site or an outdated page about you.
03What stops AI agents
Common reasons AI agents can't use a website
The problems are rarely visible to an ordinary visitor. The page looks fine in the browser, but an AI service sees something entirely different.
- Shut out by mistake
- Security rules, hosting or old settings turn AI services away. Often nobody in the business knows it is happening.
- Content that only appears after the page loads
- Text, prices or products that only show up once the browser has run code are hard or impossible for many AI services to read.
- Unclear what you offer
- Without clear structure and a machine-readable description of the business, its services and products, the AI has to guess. It would rather pick a source it understands.
- Slow or unreliable responses
- An AI service does not wait as long as a person. Pages that respond slowly or fail now and then get skipped.
- Actions that only work for people
- Ordering, booking or contact flows that need clicks and visual steps an agent cannot follow make the agent give up and move on.
Not every finding applies to everyone. A site without a shop does not need agents to be able to pay. The report says which findings are relevant to you.
04The terms
AI agent readiness, SEO, AEO and GEO: what's the difference?
The terms overlap, but each answers its own question. Agent readiness is the foundation the others build on.
- SEO
- Ranking high in a list of links that a person clicks, for example in Google.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
- Becoming the answer when someone asks an AI, so your content is cited or used as the basis of the answer.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
- How generative AI models perceive, describe and recommend your brand over time.
- AI agent readiness
- Whether AI services can get in at all, read the site reliably and see what they can do there. Without it, AEO and GEO cannot fully work.
05Use the report
How to act on the result
The report is sorted by impact. Start at the top, and give it to whoever has access to the website, the hosting and any CDN or firewall.
Fix what shuts AI out first
If AI services can't get in, nothing else helps. This is often a small change with a big effect.
Make the content easy to read
Make sure the most important content, such as services, prices, products and contact details, is available without a machine having to click its way there.
Describe the business clearly
Make it easy for an AI to understand who you are, what you offer, where you are and why someone should choose you.
Check again after changes
Run a new check once the findings are fixed, and whenever you change platform, hosting, security solution or make bigger changes to the site.
So you don't have to keep watch
How CitationLab keeps websites agent-ready
CitationLab works with AI visibility, AEO and GEO for businesses in the Nordics. We have seen that the biggest losses often come not from the content but from AI services never getting in. That is why agent readiness is the first thing we check for new clients.
- Agents that keep watch for you
- For clients on an ongoing plan, the agents in CitationLab Manager monitor the site continuously. If a new security rule, a release or a platform change shuts AI services out, we are alerted and fix it, so you don't have to keep watch yourself.
- The same watch on consent and tracking
- The agents also make sure consent, GDPR and tracking fit together. AI visibility you can't measure lawfully and accurately is hard to steer by.
- From findings to visibility
- Agent readiness is the first step. Then we measure how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI describe you, and work on the content, structure and mentions that get you recommended.
- People behind every recommendation
- The agents find and alert. Priorities and changes are decided by people with long experience in SEO, technical optimisation and AI search, together with your developer or agency.
07Limitations
What the AI agent check can't tell you
The check is an automated, technical review of one domain at one point in time. Pages behind a login, other domains, language versions and content that changes after the check may behave differently. AI services also change how they read websites, so a good result today is no guarantee for tomorrow.
A good result means AI services have what they need to use your website. It does not mean you will automatically be mentioned or recommended. Whether AI actually picks you also depends on your content, how others talk about you and what your competitors do. That is what we measure in an AI visibility analysis.
