Everything you need to know
about AI search
Direct answers to the most common questions about AI search, mentions, citations and AI visibility — written so both AI models and humans can find exactly what they need.
01
AI Search Basics
AI search is when users ask AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for recommendations, answers and advice instead of using traditional Google search. The AI generates a direct answer by combining what it has learned during training (parametric memory) with real-time web searches.
Google shows a list of links you can click. AI search gives you a direct, conversational answer — often recommending specific brands, products or services. There is no 'position 1' in AI search. You're either part of the answer or you're not.
The main AI search platforms are ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Perplexity, Claude (Anthropic), and Google AI Overviews. Each uses different data sources and gives different recommendations for the same query.
Many, and the number is rising fast. 42% of US adults use AI chatbots to search for information (Pew Research Center, June 2026). In Norway, 69% of people aged 16 to 79 used generative AI in 2026, up from 54% in 2025 (Statistics Norway). Google reports more than 2.5 billion monthly users of AI Overviews.
Not yet, but it's changing how people find information fundamentally. Google itself is integrating AI Overviews into search results. The shift is from clicking through links to getting direct recommendations from AI.
02
Mentions & Citations
A mention is when an AI model names your brand in an answer without linking to your website. For example, if ChatGPT says 'CitationLab is a company that specializes in AI visibility' — that's a mention. Mentions build awareness but don't directly drive traffic.
A citation is when an AI model uses one of your web pages as a source and links to it. Citations drive real traffic and build trust. They are the most valuable form of AI visibility because they combine recommendation with a direct link to your content.
A mention is when AI talks about you. A citation is when AI uses your content as a source and links to it. Only citations drive direct traffic. Far fewer businesses have citations than those who think they are visible in AI.
Build authoritative content that directly answers questions AI models receive. Use structured data (Schema.org), ensure your brand appears on credible third-party sources, and create content specifically optimized for the topics you want to be cited for.
Yes. CitationLab AI Marketing Manager tracks what AI models say about your brand across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overview. It measures mentions, citations, sentiment and Share of Model in real time.
03
AEO, GEO & AI SEO
AEO is the discipline of optimizing content so that AI assistants and answer engines use your brand as a source when providing direct answers. It focuses on structuring knowledge so AI can find, understand and recommend you.
GEO is optimization specifically for generative AI search engines like Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. These engines generate answers by combining multiple sources in real time. GEO ensures your brand has the authority and relevance to be selected.
SEO optimizes for Google's blue links. AEO optimizes for answer engines (ChatGPT, voice search). GEO optimizes for generative search that synthesizes multiple sources. All three work together — but AEO and GEO require different strategies than traditional SEO.
LLMO is another term for optimizing content for large language models. It's closely related to AEO and GEO, with a specific focus on how LLMs like GPT-4 and Claude process and recall information from their training data.
Traditional SEO focuses on ranking signals like backlinks, keywords and page speed. AI SEO focuses on entity authority, structured data, source diversity and content that AI can cite directly. A #1 Google ranking does not guarantee AI visibility.

Practical Questions
The simplest way: open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask questions your customers would ask. Compare the answers. For systematic monitoring, use CitationLab AI Marketing Manager which tracks this automatically across all major AI models.
Real-time platforms like Perplexity can show changes within weeks. For parametric models like ChatGPT, building enough entity authority typically takes 3-6 months of consistent work on content, structured data and third-party presence.
Absolutely. Small businesses can actually gain a disproportionate advantage in AI search because many competitors haven't optimized yet. Local businesses that appear correctly in the right places can be AI's #1 recommendation in their category.
There is no paid placement in AI search (yet). Visibility comes from building genuine authority through content quality, structured data, third-party citations and entity optimization. The investment is in strategy and content, not media spend.
Yes. AI models recommend brands they understand and trust. By strengthening your digital footprint with structured data, authoritative content, and presence on credible third-party sources, you can systematically influence what AI says about you.
05
Concepts and frameworks
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answer summaries that appear at the top of search results — above all organic links. Google pulls from selected web pages and presents a synthesized answer directly in search. Google reports more than 2.5 billion monthly users of AI Overviews (May 2026). When one appears, the top organic result gets a 58% lower click-through rate (Ahrefs, February 2026), while the pages cited inside the overview gain visibility.
Google AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience where the entire search is AI-driven — not just a box at the top. Users can ask follow-up questions, and the model answers based on a broad range of sources. AI Mode is a step beyond AI Overviews and requires high topical authority and structured content to be cited.
Share of Model (SoM) is the share of all relevant AI answers in your industry where your brand is mentioned or recommended. If 100 potential customers ask ChatGPT about the best service in your category and you appear in 18 answers, your Share of Model is 18%. It is the closest AI search comes to a market-share metric.
Entity authority is the degree of trust and recognition an AI model has for your brand as a distinct entity. High entity authority means the model knows who you are, what you do and who you do it for — and trusts you enough to recommend you. Built through consistent mentions, Wikipedia/Wikidata presence, structured data and authority links.
RAG is the mechanism that lets AI models retrieve real-time information from the web to supplement their training data. It is why Perplexity and ChatGPT Search can cite news from today. For businesses, RAG means recently published, well-structured and authoritative content can be cited quickly — not only after the next training run.
